Establishment

The League of Minnesota Poets was established in St. Paul on February 10, 1934 when thirty-three poets met at the Lowry Hotel. These early members endeavored “…to make Minnesota poetry conscious, and conscious to its own poets.” By the year’s end there were seventy-four members. Publishing poetry by Minnesota poets was one way to make poetry a part of the state culture and showcase the organization’s poetry. Another way was by instruction poets in the art of poetry so that they would become more accomplished, well-rounded poets.

Currently, The League of Minnesota Poets (LOMP) accomplishes this in a few ways:

1) By holding yearly poetry contests (See Contests for more information): poets can enter our contest to see how their poems fare alongside other poets and submit these prize-winning poems to NFSPS Contests (winners are published) or for publication in other journals, magazines and anthologies.

2) By publishing a yearly members only anthology, The Moccasin, for, and by, members.

3) By hosting two meetings held in the Fall and Spring of each year which are hosted by chapters of The League of Minnesota Poets. Members and non-members are welcome to attend these meetings where various Minnesota poets have presented programs, workshops and/or readings. Often there is an afternoon poetry seminar that is held in conjunction with the speaker, so that members may receive feedback regarding a poem-in-progress. This poem is submitted prior to the meeting. Information regarding these events are announced in The Lomplighter, The League of Minnesota Poets’ quarterly newsletter.

4) Two informal free weekend poetry retreats are hosted by Susan Chambers, LOMP Member. They are held in January (Blizzard Retreat) and July (Woodtick Poetry Retreat). Information regarding these events are also publicized in The Lomplighter and on the League of Minnesota Poets’ website.
